Celebrate Labor Day With a Festival of Flowers

Labor Day celebrates and honors American workers, from bricklayers to engineers. For most people today, Labor Day represents the end of summer and the beginning of Fall and a new school year. Many celebrate Labor Day with a day off from work, barbecues and rest and relaxation, fully unaware of the first Labor Day celebration. On Monday, September 5, 1882 10,000 workers created a festival to honor all of the labors and bring attention to their grievances.

Carpenters, bricklayers, printers, machinists, jewelry makers, shoe makers and others paraded through the streets of New York on colorful, handmade floats, playing music, singing and chanting slogans. Those laborers demanded an end to child labor, safer working conditions and better pay. After the festival ended, the laborers and their families gathered for a grand picnic in Elm Park surrounded by trees, lush green grass and various fragrant flowers. Through their efforts the original Labor Day marchers won many of their demands and created the safe working conditions we enjoy today. Below are a few tips on how you can create your own festival of flowers in honor of Labor Day.

Do you have laborers working for you? It's common for most people to think only of themselves when they think of labor. What about those you employ? Do you have someone cutting your grass, cleaning your home, washing your car? Have you ever considered creating a festival of colorful and fragrant flowers in their life? Why not treat your workers to a bouquet of Sunflowers and see their faces light up. Maybe you're a manager with a hard-working assistant. We may not want to admit it but we often take for granted the hard work others perform for us and give little appreciation except when it is required (Xmas or Birthdays). Surprise your assistant on Labor Day with a potted Bromeliad and watch his/her surprise at your unexpected thoughtfulness.

As you make your plans for the Labor Day consider flowers as a delightful accent to your day of celebration. Planning a dinner? Make a beautiful pot of Mums the centerpiece of your table. Having a picnic? Amuse your kids with whimsical stems of Gerbera Daisies. Just want to relax for the day and take it easy? No problem, light some candles and fill your home with the fragrance of Lilies.
